For the protection of the Oceans

RISE UP is a joint call to action developed by civil society, fisherfolk, Indigenous peoples, and philanthropic organisations urging governments and corporations to agree to bold action to safeguard the ocean.

It sets out common priorities, objectives and targets that our organisations collectively agree are vital to tackle the ocean crisis. We are focused on what the ocean needs to recover, not what is politically palatable.

This initiative, which the Liga para a Protecção da Natureza endorses, calls on governments and corporations to come together and agree on action to protect the ocean at the upcoming UN Ocean Conference, scheduled for Portugal from June 2-6, 2020, but which has already been postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

whay this Call to Action?

The death of coral reefs, the collapse of fish populations, and the extinction of species are evidence of this growing crisis caused by overfishing, ocean warming, acidification, pollution, and various other stressors.

It is vital to defend the ocean's ability to produce oxygen, sequester carbon, and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people. However, the international policy response so far has not come even close to what is needed to avert this ocean crisis.

Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic, many important meetings that were supposed to take place in 2020, such as the UN Ocean Conference, have been postponed. The organizations that developed and signed RISE UP still see this year as an important opportunity for the global community to come together and raise the level of ambition considerably.

In particular, we want to inspire policy makers and key stakeholders to "RISE UP" and agree on a course of action that will give our Blue Planet the best chance of survival

A RISE UP aims to:

  • Restore ocean life;
  • Invest immediately in a zero-carbon future;
  • Accelerate the transition to a circular and sustainable economy;
  • Empower and support people in the coastal zone;
  • Union for stronger global ocean governance;
  • Protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.

Objectives:

  • Manage the world's fisheries sustainably and safeguard the livelihoods they support;
  • End overfishing and destructive fishing;
  • Protect and restore threatened and endangered species, habitats, and ecological functions.
