From bees to flower flies, everyone is a pollinator

The LPN headquarters hosted another activity on pollinators, with the participation of the Portuguese Society of Entomology (SPEN), with the presence of entomologist Mário Boieiro.

This activity took place as part of the Bee Responsible project, an Iberian project coordinated by the League for the Protection of Nature (Portugal) and Ecocolmena (Spain).

After welcoming the group, entomologist Mário Boieiro gave a presentation on pollinators.

In Europe, pollinators are mainly insects, such as bees (including species of the genus Bombus, honey bees and solitary bees), wasps, flower flies, butterflies, moths, coleopterans and other species of flies. It has been proven that more than 70% of agricultural crops depend on pollinators and that their presence increases the quantity and quality of food.

Once the presentation was over and we were back in the garden, the group followed the capture of some of the solitary bees that find refuge and/or food here.

All the pollinators captured were returned to nature!

There was still room for the group to build a hotel for insects. With well-defined tasks, some sawed reeds, others created bundles of leaves and sprigs and also prepared the shelter for the butterflies.

Bees, ladybugs and butterflies can all find shelter in this insect hotel.

Many thanks to Mário Boieiro for leading this activity and to all the participants.
