On October 27, Quinta da Moenda (Moenda Farm) received a visit from the Coimbra Agricultural College of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra.
The visit was coordinated by Joaquim Sande Silva, professor at the Polytechnic of Coimbra and member of the National Board of LPN and was attended by students from the Technological Specialization in Forest Defense and the Degree in Forestry Sciences and Natural Resources.
At Quinta da Moenda the group was joined by Samuel Vieira, an LPN employee who is the driving force behind the ecological restoration work that has been done on this forest property with the main objective of protecting the existing native trees.
In addition to the history of Moenda's Farm, issues related to forestry for fire prevention and invasive species control were also addressed.
Currently, Quinta da Moenda is an example of good ecological restoration practices, presenting itself as a model forest, dominated by oaks (Quercus spp.), maples (Acer pseudoplatanus) and chestnut trees (Castanea sativa). This island of biodiversity, in the middle of a landscape dominated by eucalyptus, is the result of active management, working with nature and helping ecological succession to achieve a more diverse, stable, fire resistant and self-sustaining forest.
